PUNTER'S PAL - Version 5
INTRODUCTION
You can analyse UP TO 40 RUNNERS in any one race.
The program will assess the relative form of the horses taking many factors
into consideration. It is designed to top rate less "obvious" horses if they
have a realistic chance of winning.
If you decide to bet on any race it is wise advice that you should only stake
money that you can afford to lose. Any horse no matter how well fancied can
always lose.
HOW TO USE THE PROGRAM
Version 5 of Punter's Pal uses a simple system of drop-down menus and data
input boxes. It has been designed in such a way that you shouldn't have too
much difficulty in using the program.
The menus can be navigated using either the mouse or the keyboard.
The current item is highlighted and you can change the highlighted item by
pressing the cursor keys or moving the mouse. The left and right arrow keys
move from one drop down menu to another, as does moving the mouse left or
right. The up and down keys move up or down a drop-down menu, as does moving
the mouse up or down.
The currently highlighted item can be selected by either pressing the Enter
key or clicking the left hand mouse button.
You can use the keyboard shortcut if you prefer, by pressing the first letter
of the item you want to select (e.g. press Q to Quit from the main menu).
Don't worry if the above sounds complicated! It's easy once you actually load
the program and try out the different methods.
GETTING STARTED
The program will run from either floppy disc or hard disc. If you want to run
the program from your hard disc, simply create a directory on your hard disc
and copy all the files on the floppy disc to that directory. A simple install
program is included in the Punter's Pal files called INSTALL.BAT, this simply
creates a directory called PAL5 on drive C: and copies the needed files
from the floppy disc.
To run this installation, log onto the floppy drive and type INSTALL (press
enter)
To run the program either from the floppy disc or your hard disc, just log
onto the drive or directory that has the Punter's Pal files and type PAL5
(press enter)
MONO MONITORS
The program is set up to detect whether you have a colour monitor and runs in
colour or black & white accordingly. If it fails to accurately detect the
presence of a mono monitor, you may have difficulty in seeing the menu items
and input screens. If this is the case you can force the program to run in
black and white by entering at the DOS prompt PAL5 M This will run the
program in mono mode and it should be visible on any PC.
RUNNING THE PROGRAM
The first thing the program does is check the files to make sure you have a
good copy of the Punter's Pal program. If you get an error message saying
that the files have been altered in some way, please contact the supplier
from whom you got the Punter's Pal disc and ask them for a good copy of the
program. Your Shareware supplier can always obtain a good working copy from
the author, so they should be glad to be told if their copy has been
corrupted in any way.
Once the program files have been checked you will get an opening screen
reminding you that the program is Shareware. This screen is cleared by
pressing the appropriate key which the program picks at random.
You will then be presented with the main Punter's Pal screen with a menu
across the top of the screen.
To find out how to run the program in more detail, select the INFO menu (by
pressing I) and the item MANUAL in that menu (by pressing M). This will
display a complete manual on the screen and should answer all your
questions.
Please contact the author if you would like to register the program. More
details are on the order form and in the manual.
